Unheard Bruckner

After Bruckner had completed the Credo for his Mass No. 3 in F Minor he played the "Et incarnatus est" to Karl Waldeck. The colleague and friend told Bruckner he didn't like it as much as previous compositions, so Bruckner decided to write a new one. Mario Aschauer plays the original sketch from Bruckner’s manuscript (A-Kr C56,2) on the 1848 Ignaz Bösendorfer piano at Schloss Kremsegg (Upper Austria), built only shortly after Bruckner’s own (currently unplayable) piano.

Bruckner in Context

Bruckner composed a cantata for the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the New Linz Cathedral on 1 May 1862. In the mass service that followed, Bruckner performed a stile antico mass by Antonio Lotti. Only for the gradual and offertory new music was chosen: Bruckner's Ave Maria and a newly composed Misit Deus by his friend and colleague Engelbert Lanz. Mario Aschauer conducts the SHSU Chorale in a performance of Lanz' motet probably for the first time since 1861.
